Track: WebRTC and Real-Time Applications
WebRTC Under Constraint: Emulating Embedded Devices with a Virtual Test?Lab
Building a live video stream on a Raspberry?Pi, ESP32?CAM, or similar board is exhilarating—until thermal throttling, missing codecs, or flaky Wi?Fi derail the project. Ordering hardware first and uncovering those limits later burns time and budget. This session shows how to turn any laptop into a virtual embedded lab that faithfully reproduces the harsh realities of resource?constrained devices—no physical boards required.

We’ll cap CPU and memory with lightweight Docker containers so each container “feels” like a 1?core, 128?MB system. Using Linux tc/netem, we’ll inject latency, jitter, and packet loss to mimic poor wireless links. Inside each container we’ll spin up a minimal WebRTC pipeline (Python?aiortc or Go?Pion), connect peers via a slim WebSocket signaling service, and secure traffic through STUN/TURN—all orchestrated with a single?docker?compose file.

Together we’ll explore codec trade?offs, adaptive?bitrate levers, and debugging tricks that keep video smooth under 250?MB RAM and 200?ms RTT. A live demo will launch the whole lab with one command, introduce 5?% packet loss, and stream metrics into Grafana while CI gates automatically pass or fail the build. You’ll walk away ready to validate real?time applications entirely in software today—yet remain 100?% hardware?ready for tomorrow.
